Student Claims Phi Delts Call Him “a Nursing Fag and Pussy” and to “Watch His Back”

ImageOn August 30th, The University of Miami Hurricanes pummeled FAU’s Owls 34 to 6 during the opening game of the season. But that wasn’t the only brawl at Sun Life Stadium that day.

According to a police report filed September 4, one student approached another in line at the stadium’s restroom to say hello.

This cordial greeting was interrupted when a third person whom the police report describes as “an unknown fraternity member from Phi Delta Theta,” told one of the two (who asked not to be named but we will refer to as Will) that he wasn’t allowed to “talk to this person.”

“I can walk to whomever I want,” Will responded.

“You’re a nursing fag and a pussy,” the interloper responded according to the police report, which adds that there were 30 Phi Delts present at the time.

Another one of these Phi Delts then “got right in Will’s face in an aggressive manner,” the report states.

Then in defense, or perhaps in his potvaliancy, Will “pushed the fraternity member away.”

Will was then ejected from the stadium before he could watch Duke Johnson devour the Owls. While Will was being escorted off the premises, other Phi Delts called out that “he should watch his back” and “[called] him other names.”

Will was issued a safety escort pamphelet “advising him of his option for safety escorts on campus.” They did not arrest anyone, though it is a crime to utter threats according to Florida law.

According to the report, the case is “active.” A call was placed to Coral Gables Police to determine the status of the case. So far, it has not been returned.

Will at first agreed to discuss the encounter then told me he feared commenting would only make matters worse. He said he is “fearful that a fraternity member may jump him on campus or at a party.”

I also contacted a Phi Delt member Justin Goldsman, who declined comment. Phi Delt president Zach Taylor agreed to speak but not immediately. I will include his comments when they are received.

  1. If you’d like an accurate story then feel free to contact me. I’m the Phi Delt president and have evidence that this is backward and wildly exaggerated. Your facts are one sided and it’s pretty disgusting that you would post a story like that with no research. Your journalistic credibility is pretty weak.

    • Hi Zach, I reached out to Justin Goldsman and asked him to forward me to somone to explain their side. On the police report no one in phi delt was named which made tracking people down difficult. I published everything based on what was on the police report. I would love to interview you and publish your side of the story. My email is j.swanson2@umiami.edu.

  3. Well Zach, you can rest easy. The “Tropical Disturbance” isn’t exactly the Miami Herald. Hell, it’s not even the Miami Hurricane. This is clearly just an attempt, albeit one misguided by disillusion, to slam the fraternity life through inept journalism backed by unsubstantiated rumor, fallacious accusations, and no credible sources. This borderlines yellow journalism, but lucky for Jess Swanson, she isn’t a real reporter. To claim you “published everything from the police report” is inherently false because you yourself admit in the writing the “police report was vague.” If this garbage came across my edit desk I wouldn’t even bother revising it, I would just show you the door. Also your use of the word “potvaliancy” to make yourself sound scholarly is laughable. Stop using Thesaurus. com and just say drunk. What a joke. I’d consider a change in my major if I was you. FAST.

    • Hi Andrew! I don’t really know what to say to this. Sorry my blog for a news blogging class offended you so. I request police reports every week and I blog about them. If you want to take it up with a higher up, my professor’s email is chaz.strouse@gmail.com and the class is CNJ595 News Blogging.

But I explain in this post that I’ve reached out to the frat and am waiting to interview the president on Friday. I’ll post when I hear his side.

And I’ll admit I did laugh when you criticize my use of potvaliancy. It was a word of a day a few years ago and I love using it ironically whenever I can. But an editor can always delete a word it if it doesn’t flow, but to dismiss my entire journalism career based on one post, well, isn’t that kinda one-sided too?

Either way, every one is entitled to their own opinion, and I appreciate the time you took to write such a long-winded rant.
